OPC's Psychotherapists and Counselors - Training, Credentials & Locations
About the Referral Network's Psychotherapists and Counselors
The OPC Psychotherapist Referral Network is an Ontario association of counselors and psychotherapists who believe people are equipped to transform the obstacles of life to optimum health and happiness.
All therapists and counselors registered with the Psychotherapist Referral Network are graduates of or senior students in supervision in the Ontario Psychotherapy and Counseling Program. This psychotherapy training program typically takes a minimum of five years to complete, and involves academic studies; experiential learning groups; specialized professional development and ethics workshops; weekend-long residencies; supervised clinical practice; a Concentration / Thesis, and other requirements.
Expertise in Integrative, Psychodynamic, Behaviour and Other Evidence-Based Practice
OPC psychotherapists and counselors are prepared to integrate the theory and practice of many types of psychotherapy and counseling techniques, including cognitive behavioural therapy, psychodynamic therapy, existential and Gestalt therapy, feminist therapy, and many other psychotherapy approaches. The Ontario Psychotherapist Referral Service can match you with a therapist for individual therapy, couples counseling, family therapy and group therapy.
We encourage you to find out more about the skill and expertise of members of the Ontario Psychotherapist and Counselor Referral Network by browsing the OPC Psychotherapy Training Curriculum. You can also gain an appreciation for the general approaches and philosophies held by the psychotherapists and counselors by reading about the Philosophies that Guide the OPC Psychotherapist Training.
Professional Associations and Regulation of Psychotherapists and Counselors at OPC
The Ontario Psychotherapy and Counseling Program is registered with CAPT (the Canadian Association of Psychodynamic Therapy). Members of OPC's Referral Network are also required to be registered with CAPT and/or other professional associations that provide ongoing independent professional development opportunities, clinical practice insurance and other elements for running an ethical, effective and current psychotherapy practice.
OPC has also been proactively engaged in the processes of the New College of Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Mental Health Therapists of Ontario. This new College will be the governing body for Ontario's Psychotherapists, and OPC is working to ensure that the OPC psychotherapy training program will meet all regulatory requirements when they are introduced by the College. Our goal is to help ensure that OPC graduates will meet all requirements to become Registered Psychotherapists with the College when it is formally established.
