Psychotherapist or Counselor?
What is the difference between psychotherapy and counseling when you are looking for an appropriate referral for a Psychotherapist? How does the therapy work of psychotherapists and counselors differ from the therapy work of psychiatrists and psychologists?
Ontario Psychotherapy and Counseling Associate therapists registered with OPC Referral Network receive training in the Ontario Psychotherapy and Counseling Program to work both as a psychotherapist and a counselor. Although there are distinct definitions with regard to the work of a counselor or psychotherapist, in the therapy process the two often blend together because a short-term counseling process can lead to a longer-term psychotherapy process. The therapy process of a psychotherapist and counselor are also defined differently from the therapy work of a psychologist and a psychiatrist.
Counseling
Counseling is a broad name for a wide variety of procedures for helping individuals achieve adjustment, such as direct therapeutic discussions for problem solving. Basically a counselor supports an immediate conflict or crisis, providing relief with the discussions of potential solutions. A client works together with your counselor to repair the immediate problems. A counselor holds the belief that a disruptive environment can affect a person’s psychological life and can be put into balance with the process of skilled therapeutic discussions.
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy refers to methods of doing therapeutic analysis with clients in short- or long-term therapy. The OPC therapists and counselors believe it is important for the clients to ask the therapists in an interview how they work and how they view the roots of issues. The psychotherapy that OPC therapists will be referring to is therapy that is geared to those who are looking for an in-depth exploration of their inner world. More often than not, people are looking for long-term solutions to problems that they feel they have suffered from for a long time. Our Ontario Psychotherapy and Counseling therapists see the therapy as a journey to the self, in order to release hidden wounds by exploring the family of origin and current conflict that interferes with relationship communications. We strive to help clients to feel self-confidence in their relationships.
Psychiatry
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with a specialty in abnormal psychology who is engaged in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders. Most psychiatrists follow a medical model in that they hold the belief that mental illness is caused by chemical imbalances in the body. In other words mental illness is seen as a physical disease. The preferred method of treatment is medication and discussion around whether it is working or not. Illnesses are classified according to a cluster of symptoms; for example, schizophrenia has a specific set of symptoms. Medication often helps to relieve a client's symptoms.
Psychologist’s clinical work
A psychologist is an individual who, by means of a course of training at least through the level of the master's degree and in most cases through the doctorate, has made a specialized study of the science of psychology. A psychologist is a scientist who studies human and animal behavior in all of its complexities and nuances. The psychologist will often seek to understand the nature of living organisms and their ability to adapt to the environment. In psychology, a therapist will also try to understand the conditions that cause the behavior. A psychologist's specialty could be for example, industrial, human behavioural, or psychological testing. A psychologist draws conclusions and offers suggestions on how to improve the presenting problem.
