new posting requirements
Thanks for making it necessary to sign in before posting anything to the discussion board. I check for new postings daily and feel moved to comment/reply from time to time. I have also posted some of my own thoughts, feelings and struggles on the board and am often deeply moved by the nature of the responses I get.
I was really angered by the garbage that was posted earlier this week and I appreciate all efforts you have made to prevent this from happening again.
Changes to Discussion Board
In response to the recent problems with spam, we're making some changes to how the discussion board is set up. The biggest change is that there will be no more anonymous posting — everyone who wants to post will have to register on the site.
Don't worry, you don't have to use your real name — we understand that confidentiality is very important when dealing with the sort of issues discussed here. You can choose any username you wish, but you will need to register, and log in with your username and password, before posting.
In addition to making it easier to block spammers, this should also have the benefit of making discussions easier to follow, as each comment will show the username of the person who posted it. We will also be making a few more structural changes to make the setup of the board more similar to other discussion forums, but for now, eliminating anonymous posting is the biggest concern.
I should note that even forums that require registration can sometimes have trouble with spammers, but it's much easier to take action against them that way. No solution is 100% perfect — it's often an ongoing process. But this should help considerably.
If you have any questions about the changes, or neeed any assistance registering, please feel free to either post them here, or contact me at webmaster@psychotherapyandcounseling.ca.
Please note: for the next day or two, during the transition period, I've set it so that anonymous commenters can still post, but their comments will be held for approval before they show up on the site. That should allow regular users time to adjust and get registered. Once the changes are completed, that will be changed so that there is no anonymous posting at all.
One additional note about the registration process
You do need to enter your e-mail address when registering, because the system will send you an e-mail with a link that you need to click to complete the process. This is another security precaution, to help guard against spammers using automated programs to create lots of accounts for themselves.
But please rest assured that the e-mail address you enter will not be publicly viewable — only OPC web site administrators have access to that information, and it will never be shared with anyone. If you still feel uncomfortable providing your e-mail address, one option is to create a web-based e-mail account using a free service like Gmail or Yahoo, separate from your normal address, and use it just for this board.
Also: the system will initially assign you a random password, but after clicking on the link in the registration e-mail, you will be able to change it to anything you want. You don't need to keep the random password it gives you unless you want to.
Spam
We at OPC are very sorry for anyone who was exposed to the awful spam that hit our site yesterday. We work very hard to keep that content off our site and apologize for any upset it may have caused. Thank you for your understanding, we truly value this community of writers and readers, the Administration of OPC.
following the discussion
One way to follow the new posts is to go to the section titled "Recent Comments" as all new comments are posted there in the order that they are written. Hope this is helpful
Recent comments
Thanks for pointing that out; I tend to miss things around the margins as that is usually where the paid advertising is on many websites (which I don't miss at all; I ignore it).
I will give that a try and see how it goes. And I am still open to suggestions...

following the discussion
While I find the "recent comments" section helpful to reading the most recent posts, it does not help when a reply is posted days, or even a week, after the original comment. It can happen that someone wants to think about a reply for a few days before posting, and it is sometimes difficult to associate the reply with the original comment. Any suggestions?
Navigating the posts
It is extremely difficult to follow the conversations as they are not dated or flagged as new. This results in the necessity of scrolling through each topic, trying to remember what has alrady been read and what has not. I find this a major disincentive to joining the discussions on a regular or even infrequent basis.
Ironically, these posts are date and time stamped. Is there the possibility that one of the freely available bulletin-board software system could be implemented? As the discussions grow ever larger I fear they will become unwieldy and will not attract a widespread sudience, due to the difficulty in keeping track of the material.
This is an important plaxce for discussion and it deserves the best chance to become well-known and active.

I see the dates now
Okay, I have got to stop posting at 0300.... yes, the posts are dated but one has to try to remember what has already been read and what has not. As the lists grow it becomes a lot of scrolling and scanning and trying to remember.
While I am breaking my new decision not to post at 0300, I also find that without any means of identifying the auhor (even an anonymous on-line name woudl help) it is difficult to locate the newer material. I find that I simply cannot remember all the topics and replies in order to join in where appropriate.
I enjoy the discussion but find I am frustrated trying to keep everything ordered and sorted, whcih means I become less able to participate.
If anyone has any thoughts on how I can improve my experience I would be most receptive and grateful.
Douglas
KINDLY REMOVE SPAM UNDER THE 'GENERAL UNHAPPINESS' TOPIC
Kindly remove spam from the "general unhappiness" topic titled 'stigma prevents hispanics from getting tested for hiv/aids'.
Thank you so much.
Spam problem
Thank you for reporting this as we have been getting some spam lately. They will not only be edited out but we also report them as unacceptable so they don't hit repeat button.

No, I don't want viagra on line
Thanks so much for removing all that garbage that was posted on the discussion board early this morning. I was livid when I saw it.
I check out the discussion board daily to connect with others on their healing journeys, and I really appreciate that you cleaned up the site as quickly as you did.
Thanks again.
Discussion Board problems fixed
Hello all,
Very sorry about the problems we were experiencing with the discussion board! A software upgrade had been applied to the site, but not fully completed -- that's fixed now, and everything should be working normally again. Let me know if you experience any further problems.

Hi everyone. I just wanted to update our posters on the situation; we seem to be having a few problems with the discussion board and I wanted to reassure you all that each of your posts is read and researched. We are always working to make the board more accessible and to iron out any bugs. Some issues will take more time than others to repair but we are working on it and every report helps so keep that feedback coming, okay?
Thanks to everyone for their patience.
I'm so upset! I'm working
I'm so upset! I'm working with Windows Vista, Internet Explorer, all updated and ready to roll....I just spent almost an hour typing a response in the Spirituality heading...all at once the page refreshed itself and I lost my post! I realize now I should be "saving" any post that is lengthy, but I was driven to type my thoughts and now it's gone...back to the board, I'll be sure to save my post every couple of sentences...
auto save feature has been added
We have added an auto-save feature that will let you know if you are about to refresh or leave a page where you have added comments but not saved them. Hopefully this will be helpful to you.
I sincerely sympathize; to
I sincerely sympathize; to lose such a large post is very disappointing. My suggestion to you is very simple but because we don't have an auto-save feature on the board at the moment, this might be helpful to you and other posters.
Personally, when I'm typing a large response on a message board, I tend to copy my reply repeatedly as I'm typing it. If you hold down the Control button and hit "A", you select all the text in the box in which you're typing. Hit Control and "C" to copy it. Then simply click your mouse on the spot where you stopped typing and go ahead with your response. It takes a split second to do it and will save you loads of frustration.
Just be sure you don't copy something else to the clipboard before you hit "save"!
For simplicity sake, try to remember it like this: ctrl+a to select All and ctrl+c to Copy it. This works with many programs, including almost anything you type into, like Word, Notepad, within a browser, etc.
If you happen to lose what you're typing, simply click in the box and hit Control and "V" to paste and you should get your last copied version of your text.
Thank you for your help, I
Thank you for your help, I really appreciated the quick response in trying to help....I will remember the suggestion on my next lengthy post...something about clicking and saving is very reassuring!
I haven't posted my issues
I haven't posted my issues earlier because I think that I am having the same trouble with the look of the site that others have been having. I use Microsoft explorer - and my version is 2002 XP if that is of help. There are a few annoying things - often the top of the first post is cut off - especially if I am posting a reply. This also happens when I preview my own. The top of your troubleshooting message is also cut off - it starts on the second line "bugs they might...". There is also a line of brown text - with the headings running right through the middle of it. When I have my favourites open on the left side of the window - the frame doesn't compensate by resizing the way it does on other sites - so I have to close it in order to be able to read through the site - or get all the information because the right side simply cuts off and even if I scroll on it - I can't see it. Not sure if this is clear because I am not very computer literate. I do use other sites and have not had these problems. Hope this helps. I think the site looks great other wise.
Try a newer browser and see if that improves your experience
It sounds like you may be using Internet Explorer 6, which is obsolete and full of unpatched security flaws.
There are many free browsers available which will improve your experience, such as Apple's Safari, Firefox or Google's Chrome.
I am using Mozzilla FireFox
I am using Mozzilla FireFox browser and the site was looking great on my computer at home. However, over the last several days when I go to the discussion board area, the pictures on the black ribbon are now in 2 rows, overlapping and the menu is on two lines.
Thanks!
Could you check your screen
Could you check your screen resolution for me? Right-click on your desktop and go to Properties and find your display settings. There should be a slide bar there with two numbers attached to it, i.e. 800 & 600 or 1024 & 768
That would be a very big help in determining your problem. To me, it sounds as though your display should be wider. If your resolution is set to anything below a certain number, you'll experience overlap issues on the site.

Hello, I followed your suggestions about the screen resolution and it made no difference. As I said before, last week the site looked perfect and I did not change any settings on my computer. As someone mentioned prior I visist many other sites and am not expereincing any problems with viewing their sites.
Many thanks to you for your work on the site as it is a wonderful place to come and share.

It sounds like you may have an outdated cache of the site.
In FireFox, you can clear your browser's cache by pressing ctrl+shift+delete all at the same time.
You can also try pressing ctrl+0 (that's a zero) to ensure your text size is set to default.
Please let us know if either of those processes help.
Thanks!

Thank you for your suggestions, however even after I followed your instructions the pictures still are on two different rows with the writing bleeding into the pictures. I am running Windows 2000 with Mozilla as my browser. As previously mentioned the website on my computer looked great until the end of last week and that is when I began experiecing the problems.

Thank you for wanting to hear about the various bugs people may have while trying to use the discussion board.
There is a slight problem with the look of the black ribbon on each page of the Ontario Psychotherapy and Counseling Referral Network. The arrows run into the words. It is however usable but not a nice look.
