If you’re considering starting therapy and notice that some options are with “student therapists,” you might wonder: What does that mean? Will the therapy be helpful? Is it worth trying? This blog explores what it means to work with a student therapist — and why, for many people, it can be a meaningful and accessible choice.

What Is a Student Therapist?

A student therapist at OPCC is someone who is in the final stages of an intensive, multi-year psychotherapy training program. Before they ever sit in the therapist’s chair, our students have already completed at least three years of experiential and theoretical training — including extensive lab-based practice and clinical observation.

Our 4th-year students are therapists-in-training who are completing their clinical practicum under close supervision. They are not yet members of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), but they work under the direct oversight of a Registered Psychotherapist approved by the CRPO to provide clinical supervision.

Our 5th-year students continue to deepen their clinical practice. In the final three months of their training, they are eligible to transition to RP (Qualifying) status and become registered with the CRPO, allowing for an even more independent practice — though they still work under clinical supervision during this period.

Will the Therapy Still Be Effective?

Yes — absolutely. While student therapists are still building their clinical hours, they bring a great deal of attentiveness, dedication, and depth to their work. Many clients find that student therapists offer:

  • Thoughtful presence — they’re highly engaged and genuinely invested in your growth
  • Up-to-date training — they integrate the latest psychodynamic and relational theory into their practice
  • Ongoing supervision — their work is closely supported by a seasoned Registered Psychotherapist
  • A relational, depth-oriented approach — OPCC therapists are trained to explore underlying patterns, not just surface symptoms

Are There Benefits to Seeing a Student Therapist?

There are a few distinct advantages to working with a student therapist:

  • Lower fees: Student therapists typically offer more affordable sessions, making therapy more accessible
  • Time and care: Students often bring patience and attentiveness to their work that many clients deeply appreciate
  • Collaborative energy: Clients often enjoy being part of a process where the therapist is learning, reflecting, and actively supported by a clinical supervisor

In fact, many clients find that the added layer of supervision enhances their experience, knowing that multiple professionals are thinking alongside the work.

Is It Safe to Talk to a Student Therapist?

Yes. All student therapists at OPCC work under strict ethical and professional standards. They:

  • Complete a rigorous internal review before beginning clinical work
  • Are supervised by an experienced Registered Psychotherapist recognized by the CRPO
  • Receive ongoing training in trauma-informed care, cultural humility, and professional ethics
  • Are bound by OPCC’s confidentiality policies and clinical protocols

Your emotional safety, privacy, and dignity are central to the therapeutic process.

How Do I Know If It’s the Right Fit?

As with any therapist, fit is key. A student therapist might be a good fit for you if:

  • You’re open to someone who is developing their professional identity with care and humility
  • You value a relational, curious, and thoughtful approach to therapy
  • You’re looking for a more affordable option without compromising on depth or safety
  • You feel emotionally safe, seen, and respected in your early sessions

If it doesn’t feel like the right match, that’s okay. We can support you in finding another therapist within our network.
